How to start it, what it asks for, and how to make it stop.
Install and start
Get Anthropic Poop on the Mac App Store and open it. It requires macOS 14 or later. It has no Dock icon: its icon, a small A, appears on the right side of the menu bar.
Click the icon and choose Start. The first time, two things happen:
- A file panel opens on your Desktop folder. Choose it and click Use this folder. The app can only write where you point it; this is how macOS protects your files.
- macOS asks whether Anthropic Poop may control Finder. Click Allow. The app uses this only to put each new file's icon under the creature.
The creature then appears on your desktop, under your windows. Show the desktop to see it.
Settings
Choose Settings… in the menu.
- Desktop folder
- The folder the files go to. Choose another one if you want.
- Leaves a poop every
- The walking time between two drops, from 1 second to 10 minutes.
- Keeps at most
- How many files stay on the Desktop, up to 2000. When the limit is reached, the oldest file is removed before a new one is dropped.
- Walking speed
- How fast it wanders. Fleeing from the cursor is four times faster.
- Clean up the Desktop
- Removes every file the app created. Only files whose names start with
anthropic-poop-are touched.
Stop and quit
Stop in the menu hides the creature and stops the drops; the files stay. Quit (Command-Q) quits the app. To uninstall, quit the app, then drag Anthropic Poop from the Applications folder to the Trash.
Questions
- I don't see the creature.
- It lives on the desktop, under all windows, on the main display only. Show the desktop or look at the display that has the menu bar.
- The file shows up somewhere else and then jumps under the creature.
- Finder places new icons on its grid first; the app moves them as soon as Finder allows. With many icons on the Desktop this can take a moment.
- I denied the Finder permission.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation, turn on Finder under Anthropic Poop, and start again.
- Can I catch it?
- Yes. It runs for two seconds, then stops to catch its breath. Grab it then.
